Is the Tyler Perry Camp Using Spike Lee’s Criticism to Promotwe New Film?
I was down south earlier this week and realized that there are some things that I would not consider to be news had gone viral. Do you realize that Spike Lee‘s remarks about Tyler Perry‘s films first went viral in 2009?
Doesn’t that bring everything into perspective? Anyone who criticizes the great Tyler Perry is jealous and the consumer decided they want to “prove Spike wrong” and POW! Tyler has another box office hit! Whats really brought all of this back into the lime light is Tyler’s open letter to fans and critics on his page… most of which is not aimed solely at Spike Lee.
Just a little food for thought. Your opinion?
[Celebrity Tidbits] Brandy to Announce New Label Next Week + Idris Elba ‘Checks’ Tyler Perry
Brandy has been working on her new album deal for months now. Fans of her music have been anticipating the announcement. Unlike some of my fellow Brandy lovers, I really don’t care what label it is. I just want Brandy’s musical talented to be respected! Anywho, Brandy tweeted her followers about the label announcement.
As some of you know, Idris is my long-lost twin.. kinda… on a REALLY good day… according to a few ladies whose opinion I admire! He was recently speaking at the Paul Robeson Center of Rutgers University’s Newark campus for the Len’s Artist Spotlight. He was asked about the Spike Lee/Tyler Perry debate. Here’s what he had to say:
“Can I be candid? I don’t like all of Tyler Perry’s films. Yes, I did work with Tyler for “Daddy’s Little Girls” because it portrayed a positive image of a black father. I am happy for Tyler’s success…we need Tyler Perry…by going to support his movies, we need to show economic strength. But we are also responsible for elevating film. I’m not with buffoonish characters like Madea or Big Momma.”

[Video] Spike Lee Talks About his ‘Beef’ with Tyler Perry
This is an interesting discussion. I think that ultimately, the consumer is at fault. You can’t fault Tyler Perry for making the movie, but you can pressure him to do something that is just as educational as it is entertaining. “For Colored Girls” was a great film for Tyler because there was less cooning.
It will be quite refreshing to watch an original film of Tyler’s that challenges me, makes me think or causes me to want to know about my heritage. I can see where Spike Lee is coming from. I wish that people would not think that Spike’s critique of Tyler has anything to do with being jealous. We will not get better until we challenge ourselves to accept challenges!
